Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
A: An author....
Q: What are you afraid of?
A: Heights...well not the heights, but the falling from the high thing!
Q: What’s your favourite colour?
A: Holly berry red!
Q: What is your favourite possession?
A: My memory. It would be terrible to lose that!
Q: How long have you been a writer?
A: Writing is the only thing I can always remember doing! Every other ‘hobby’ I’ve had I’ve eventually given up on....but not writing!
Q: Do you write by hand or on the computer?
A: I write all my notes by hand...and all my plans. Then I write on the computer making loads of changes on my printouts by hand...so quite a bit of both!
Q: Which of your characters do you most identify with?
A: Brodie is definitely me as a child....loving stories and being obsessed with puzzles. But I identify with all my characters as I think I see in them what I could be or might have been be if things were different in my life.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
A: Reading....often non fiction books and history book, as well as stories....and talking to and listening to people who’ve done interesting and exciting things.
Q: What sort of books do you write?
A: Adventure stories which connect to historical puzzles.
Q: Which writers/illustrators would you have on your dream team and why?
A: I would have five writers in my dream team! JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis as I love their stories which take you to brand new worlds and span several books. I’d also have Andrew Norriss and Natalie Babbitt because their stories put ordinary people in extraordinary situations and so their stories get me thinking long and hard about what I would do in the same situations.
Q: I loved writing this bit....
A: ‘Mr. Smithies was a member of a secret organisation. It was such a secret organisation that even Mr. Smithies’ wife didn’t know anything about it.’
